If you’re in the market for a low mileage Saleen Mustang, here’s your chance to own one. Surprisingly it’s in pretty decent shape too, especially for being a 26 year old car. We found this one on eBay: it’s a 1989 Saleen Mustang SSC which is numbered 44 out of 161 made (which by the way were all hatchback models) and has only 29,740 miles on its odometer. If you’re wondering what exactly the “SSC” model is: grab yourself a cold drink and prepare for the knowledge that’s about to be dropped.
This Saleen Mustang has a lot of history behind it: while Ford did their own weird take on the Mustang’s 25th anniversary by offering the “7-up” model (limited to 4,103 LX convertibles produced), Steve Saleen decided to introduced his take on the Mustang’s 25th. Introduced on April 17, 1989 was the Saleen Mustang SSC (Saleen Super Car).
Up until this model year, all Saleen Mustangs’ had suspension, brake and aero enhancements but no changes to the engines. The reasoning behind that? Similar to today’s EPA standards, the 1980s also had strict regulations when it came to road-worthy vehicles. Nevertheless, Saleen found an alternative to making his Mustang street-legal. Starting with a V-8 LX hatchback he began with enlarging the intake ports, added a larger throttle-body, a new intake manifold, alternative rocker arms (to compensate for more air intake), stainless steel tubular headers, a pair Walker Dynomax mufflers, and a heavy-duty cooling system. The result was 292 horsepower and was street-legal in all 50 states. Not bad for “just a tuner in the ’90s.”
SSC’s are sought after for a number of reasons. This car was one of the earliest examples of someone pushing the limits of the factory Fox body. The SSC might have even helped steer the tide of what could be done with these cars towards the outrageousness that became the Fox body movement. This one is for sale over on eBay but you’ll have to be willing to pay a premium to own it, even a SSC with some miles and some wear will command a premium at sale.
The interior and exterior show of this Saleen SSC shows some slight patina, as you can see the number 44 fading on the front bumper. But for the vehicle's age, the car is in pretty good shape
