Shelby Mustangs are most commonly associated with this race-ready ‘60’s creations and more recently, the more modern Mustangs bearing the Shelby moniker. Shelby did delve into other Mustangs though, including the famed Fox-body. The result was the Shelby Mustang SAAC MKI, a precursor to the 1993 Cobra. Only 65 of these Shelby’s were ever made, making them one of the rarest Shelby’s ever built.
One of these rare Mustangs made its way on to eBay…where it didn’t draw a single bid, despite the low starting price of just $2,000.
So what exactly is a Shelby Mustang SAAC? In 1990, Carroll Shelby got together with Ford Racing, and even had a dash of SVO tossed in. Shelby took the standard Mustang 5.0 and added Ford’s new GT40 components, including new upper and lower intakes, heads, a B303 cam, and a 65 mm throttle body. The result was 295 horsepower, a staggering amount in 1991 when the car debuted. The suspension, interior, and even the rear end were all upgraded, bringing the total cost of the car to $43,000 back in 1991. While production was once planned to produce up to 250 of these special cars per-year, just 65 were ever built as Ford soon came out with its own Cobra in 1993. At $28,000 but with similar performance, it priced out the SAAC which quickly faded away.
This particular Shelby SAAC MKI has just 12 miles on it, and came from a private collection. The car has had just two owners, and it’s been for sale before. It’s basically brand-new off the showroom floor with just a few miles on it from break-in and moving it around a climate-controlled garage. Last time, the asking price was around $40,000; this time, the starting bid was just $2,000 with a reserve, yet the auction ended without drawing a single bid. Many Shelby and Mustang fans have never even heard of this car before, but we’re still surprised it didn’t draw any attention. It’s a super rare car in new condition. Maybe Fox-body cars haven’t hit their collectible potential yet?
