What would you say is the most vulnerable part of a car? Is it the glass windows that surround us, or the supple leather seats that are prone to tearing? If you ask us, we’d have to say that the most vulnerable and under-appreciated part of a car is a paint job. Think about it. In addition to putting up with buffeting winds, driving rain storms, and sometimes even hail, paint is often the first victim of fender benders and bangups. It’s rare to find a car these days with a nice paint job that hasn’t been sprayed over, doubly so when you talk about classic American muscle.
But this eBay auction for a 1970 BOSS 429 Mustang claims that this car still wears the original paint from when it left the Ford factory over forty years ago. Plus, its got a big block BOSS engine under the hood. What more could you ask for?
In 1969 and 1970, Ford produced limited numbers of its BOSS Mustangs. While many opted for the venerable BOSS 302 engine, which was made famous on the Trans Am circuit, others opted for BOSS 329 engine, a $1,208.00 option back in the day. Just 499 BOSS 429 Mustangs were built in 1970, and this particular one was also equipped with the desirable 4-speed manual transmission and the Drag Pack, Competition Suspension, power steering, power front disc brakes, and even air conditioning. It’s very well equipped for a street legal race car.
The auction claims that this car underwent a mechanical restoration, but cosmetically it is untouched, save for the interior carpet and fuel tank. Impressive if true, as few cars of this caliber survive in such good condition after almost a half century. This Mustang has just 31,000 miles on the odometer as well, meaning it is barely broken in…and ready for some racing, forty years after it was factory fresh. The starting bid is $225,000, a princely sum to be sure, but a testament to the value these cars still hold.
