We all long to own a classic Shelby Mustang, though some poor souls have to settle for the larger (and faster) modern Shelbys that seem almost…common these days. The thing nobody tells you about owning a classic Shelby is that, well, the whole thing is a bit uncivilized. This is especially true for older people who have surely come to appreciate the advances made in sports car suspension and engine technology. But what if you could have the classic looks, with a modern chassis and drivetrain underneath?
What you would have is today’s eBay Find of the Day. It’s a 2009 Shelby GT500 Mustang with the body of a 1967 Shelby body. And it is beautiful.
This is not the first marriage of modern and classic muscle cars we have seen, though it may offer the most potential for mayhem. The 2009 Shelby GT500, with a supercharged 5.4 liter V8 under the hood rated at 500 horsepower. Backing that is the modern six-speed manual transmission that put the old 4-speed transmissions to shame.
But the real improvement comes in the form of safety and driving enhancements, like a modern suspension, airbags, crumple zones and more. This is a 2009 GT500…only it has the body of a ‘67 Shelby, so it comes with all those modern conveniences. The asking price of $150,000 is a bit steep, but you’d have one wicked cool ride to show for it. Between this and the ‘05 Saleen with a ‘69 body, we’d have a hard time choosing which was done better. If it were your money, which contemporary classic would you rather have?
