It wasn’t until the early 90’s that interest in Sport Utility Vehicles, or SUV’s, really started to kick into full gear. Pickup truck sales have always been strong in this country, but with the wave of SUV’s flooding the market, automakers decided to capitalize with sportier trucks like the S-10 Syclone and Ford Lightning. Now highly desirable, such vehicles are few and far between and often command a hefty price premium.Take today’s
eBay find of the dayis a pristine example of a 1993 Ford Lightning, fully loaded, and with just 37,000 miles on the odometer.1993 was the first year of the F-150 Lightning, and also one of the rarest years produced, with just 5,276 built. Of those, about half were in Bright Red (the only other color available was Black). But what makes this Lightning really special is that it came equipped with a high-output 5.8 liter V8 engine that helped it turn a faster quarter-mile than its nearest rival, the Chevy SS454. With a 4:10 rear-end and 4-speed automatic transmission, this big truck could haul ass.
This particular, pristine example still wears the original paint, although the Firestone tires were replaced by Toyos. Everything else is as stock as the day it left the showroom floor, and it has driven just 37,000 miles in about 20 years. Alas, the eBay ad, which was asking about $15,500, ended before the truck sold. Has it found a new owner, or did the seller simply reconsider? We’d have a hard time parting with such a great truck, that’s for sure.
