Whenever we buy a new car, we always do so with lofty expectations of ourselves and our vehicles. Regular oil changes, plenty of cleaning, and no rainy days are common promises we make to our car. This is especially true for those cars tuned by aftermarket companies, which cost a good deal more than the car on the showroom floor, and are produced in more limited quantities.
So it’s sad when we see an awesome car like this SMS 460 Mustang has barely had time to break in its engine. This poor, burned wreck sold for just over $3,500 on eBay and had just 900 miles on the odometer when it went up in flames.
SMS is Steve Saleen’s latest company, and he stuck with what he knew, pumping out limited edition muscle cars like the 2010 SMS 460 Mustang. The supercharged 4.6 liter V8 engine was said to make 470 horsepower 427 ft-lbs of torque. While there was a 460x version with about 660 horsepower, the roasty, toasty car you see here is a “base” model 460 valued at around $65,000. This car was on display at Bob Bell Ford in Maryland when it mysteriously went up in flames. Arson has not been ruled out, but even finding the criminal won’t save this limited edition Mustang.
The front half of the car suffered the worst damage, and the engine bay is completely fried. We’re not sure what, if anything, could be salvageable from in front of the windshield except maybe those shiny chrome wheels. The interior is burned, there is snow everywhere, and to restore this car would probably require more money than its worth. But for $3,500, would you take a chance and try to save what you could from this husk of a Mustang?
