Steve Saleen hasn’t just been on the cutting edge of Mustang performance for nearly 30 years now he has pushed that edge of Mustang performance well beyond what it was when he came on the scene. The 1990s belonged to Saleen, and while Shelby is now the name of the Mustang game, Steve Saleen is still making big moves in the muscle car world, and his influence is still heavily felt.
Saleen’s work even influenced Mustang production, like this little piece of history that was once the Saleen company founder’s own personal car. This 2005 Saleen S281 Mustang “SkyVu” gave potential buyers a big glass roof option, but unfortunately never made it into production as hard times fell on the auto industry. That means eBay item number 171141771672 with a Buy It Now price of $99,999 is quite literally one of a kind, and could one day be worth some really big bucks.
The SkyVu option replaced most of the Mustang’s roof with a sliding panoramic glass roof, maintaining the rigidity of the coupe design while giving a convertible-like driving experience. The one and only SkyVu prototype was done to Steve Saleen’s personal 2005 Mustang, and has racked up just over 16,000 miles in the eight years since it rolled off the assembly line.
Unfortunately the global economy took a nose dive right around the SkyVu Mustang’s debut, and it remained a concept car only. However, Ford took the idea the next year and made the glass roof an option on production Mustangs. That’s hardly the only upgrade Saleen made to his personal Mustang though. The former SCCA racer obviously wouldn’t drive around in just some dolled up Mustang GT.
Under the hood is a 4.6 liter supercharged V8 engine tuned to deliver 465 and 425 ft-lbs of torque, and Saleen’s engineers fitted the Mustang with the perfect compliment of suspension upgrades. With big brakes, big exhaust pipes, and big value as a one-of car, could this little slice of Saleen history one day be worth Carroll Shelby collectible money?
