Rumors have been swirling that the Mustang Mach 1 could be making a triumphant return soon, although we’ve yet to see any truly convincing proof that it is. The rumors did get us thinking about the last time Ford built a Mach 1 Mustang, which inevitably led us to researching just how much these semi-rare Mustangs might be worth.
What we didn’t expect to find was a barely-driven, 2003 Mach 1 on Cars.com with just 1,050 miles reading on its odometer. Wearing a handsome Azure Blue paint job and looking untouched by the hands of time, is this 14-year old Mach 1 worth the nearly $26,500 asking price?
The ’03-’04 Mustang Mach 1 was envisioned as a way to bridge the large price gap between the base Mustang GT and the track-ready ’03-’04 SVT Cobra model. The Mach 1 featured an all-aluminum 4.6-liter DOHC V8 with a 10:1 compression ratio, high-flow cylinder heads and more aggressive camshafts that helped boost horsepower from the GT’s 265 to a healthy 305. That was far from the only modifications the Mach 1 received from Ford, however.
Brembo brakes, a stiffer (and lower) suspension, along with Tokico gas shocks and struts borrowed from the Cobra, made the Mach 1 more nimble in the twisties. It did not, however, get the independent rear suspension (IRS) setup from the Cobra – though the distinctive styling upgrades help it stand out from your typical GT – particularly the Shaker hood scoop that jutted through a hole in the hood. That option alone makes the Mach 1 a must-have for collectors.
But with a price of $26,291 during this post, and with just over 1,000 miles on the clock, is this Mach 1 is destined for a collection rather than the road? If you want a Mach 1 to tool around in, they can be had in great condition for half the price. Then again, it’d be pretty fun to tool around in a basically new Mustang from the early ’00s.
