Ford Builds Unique Mustang For USAF Thunderbirds

thunderbirds-360 years ago, the United States Air Force commissioned the Thunderbirds, a group of highly-trained jet pilots who put on flying demonstrations around the world. Nicknamed the “Ambassadors of America,” the Thunderbirds fly the F-16 Falcon in a familiar red, white, and blue paint scheme. They are the world’s fastest multi-jet demonstration team, regularly performing incredible flying maneuvers at 500 mph or faster.

To help commemorate 60 years of entertaining hundreds of thousands of people, Ford has created a one-off 2014 Mustang GT inspired by the Thunderbirds, which it donated to the EAA Young Eagles program.

Flying the F-16C, the only modifications made to the Thunderbird’s planes are the replacement of the 20mm cannon with a smoke system, and the removal of the jet fuel starter exhaust door, and the patriotic paint job. In the same vein, the Mustang GT has been painted red, white, and blue, adorned with USAF stickers, and it has the expensive glass-roof option.

The Mustang also received a Ford Racing Parts 625 hp supercharger package and FRPP suspension modifications including a Brembo brake package. Creations ‘n Chrome also created a unique bellypan for the car that matches the Thunderbirds paint scheme. Forgiato created the custom 22 inch wheels. Inside the car the navigation screen and instrument cluster have been modified. A Ford Racing rear seat delete has also been installed. Unique Thunderbirds elements adorn the Recaro seats. Custom door sills also done in the Thunderbirds theme are also present. The puddle lamps which when optioned on a Mustang normally project the running horse, instead project an aircraft image inspired by the Thunderbirds.  Additionally this car is VIN number 001 further adding to it’s collector status.

The Mustang is being donated to the EAA Young Eagles program, which since 1992 has taken 1.6 million kids on free intro flights, helping get young people interested in airplanes. For us car folk, the Mustang’ sports custom wheels and a unique interior with an aircraft-inspired control panel and Thunderbird-embroidered seats. For the Air Force fan who needs a muscle car in their life, this is the car you want.
