Under the leadership of Alan Mulally, Ford has turned a complete about-face from the car company it was just 5 years ago. More streamlined and focused, Mulally has promoted a plan that he calls “One Ford”, where all of Ford’s global products share from a universal parts bin. The linchpin of One Ford is the Focus, from which the Blue Oval will derive no less than 11 different models, among them the B-Max crossover and Focus ST hot hatch.

But because Ford is rolling out many of these high-volume models this year, development has been scaled back on lower-volume models like the Focus RS. Australia’s CarAdvice reports that development of the Focus RS has been put on temporary hiatus while Ford “cleans up” the launch of other models.

That’s the word according to Ford’s Director of Small Cars Gunnar Herrmann, who is in charge of overseeing the 11 Focus-based models. These cars are expected to account for about 2 million sales worldwide in the next year, while the Focus RS usually sees very limited production runs. Though having to wait is rarely a good thing, Ford doesn’t want to spread itself too thin and deliver half-baked products. Patience, padawan.

Development of the Focus RS is said to be well underway. Rumors have it pegged as a front-wheel drive hatchback sporting a 2.3 liter, 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine that it will share with the next generation Mustang, due out in 2015. It’ll be more powerful than the previous Focus RS, which means at least 300 horsepower, if the rumors prove true.

We’re sure Ford wants to keep the Mustang on schedule, seeing as how it’s April, 2014 50th birthday is just a little over two years away. That’s not the kind of deadline you can miss. So sorry Focus RS fans, but you’ll just have to wait a little longer for your hot hatchback.
