Introduced in 2010 as a 2011 model, the Ford Fiesta subcompact was the first decent American sub-compact car in…well, ever. With technology, a decent engine, and futuristic good looks, the Fiesta has quickly carved out a niche for itself in the sub-compact market. However, Ford has been aggressively redesigning its cars about every three years, keeping its products feeling fresh and now.

With the Fiesta approaching its second full year on the market, Ford already has a refreshed model in the works. Carscoop caught pictures of the test mule out on the road, revealing a sharper front end while reporting that a 1.0 liter EcoBoost is a sure thing for the refreshed Fiesta.

Ford has done a good job keeping the new looks under wraps. Even so, it is clear that the new Fiesta will be less “cute” and more “serious”, with sharper headlights, a modified grille, and a new hood with Ford’s “power bump”. While most of the rest of the car remains unchanged, a 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine is all but guaranteed at this point.

Ford recently introduced a “pre-production” model of a two-door Fiesta ST, and the 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine is already in use in the European Focus. In the Focus, it makes 123 horsepower and up to 125 ft-lbs of torque, with a “power boost” feature adding additional power for a brief time.

Over here, a 1.0-liter EcoBoost Fiesta could deliver up to 49 mpg, while still delivering very reasonable horsepower. With gas prices getting ever closer to $4 a gallon, a 49 mpg Fiesta can’t get here soon enough.
