Last month Ford pulled the covers off of its 2013 Fusion mid-size sedan, with a bold new look and host of technological features that blow other sedans away. With two optional turbocharged engines, all-wheel drive, and sizzling style, the new Fusion looks ready to rumble. So it wasn’t surprising when Ford unwrapped its Sprint Cup NASCAR competitor for the 2013 season, a new Ford Fusion.
Even though this new NASCAR racer is still a year from joining the races Ford decided to showcase two of its new NASCAR racers, a black one and a white one, ahead of this weekend’s Daytona 500 race, and they snapped some purty photos to share with us too.
Like all stock cars, the 2013 Fusion NASCAR is underpinned by the chassis of the “Car of Tomorrow.” Unlike many competitors however, Ford went to great lengths to keep the look and shape of its 2013 Fusion in the NASCAR model. It’s actually rather impressive if you ask us, as most NASCAR’s bear little or no resemblance to the car or brand they’re supposed to represent.
Though it says EcoBoost, the 2013 Ford Fusion NASCAR still runs a Car of Tomorrow chassis
Alas, we doubt Ford’s 2013 Fusion will be rocking EcoBoost technology on the track…though NASCAR is finally making the transition to electronic fuel injection. But despite the badges proclaiming “EcoBoost,” we seriously doubt these Fusion stock cars will use anything other than a 358 cubic-inch V8 engine.
But Ford’s decision to keep the stock car and production model looking so close could have other effects on the sport. Maybe more brands will follow suit, and who knows? Maybe one day, stock car racing will actually race stock cars, just like they used to.
