To the sadness of many Ford fans, the Blue Oval recently announced that it would close up domestic manufacturing in Australia, citing rising costs and a shrinking car market. That means the end of a long and proud tradition of Ford cars in Australia, most famously of all the Falcon, an all-around performance car that won the hearts and minds of many of Oz’s gearheads and speedfreaks. But all is not lost, Ford of Australia fans. News.com.au has an exclusive report that, according to their sources, insists that replacing the venerable Falcon will be the Ford Mustang.
Ford has already made it clear that they want to sell the Mustang across several continents and numerous countries, including Europe and Asia. Ford hasn’t sold the Mustang in Australia since the late 1960’s, instead giving the Aussies the rear-drive Falcon. So this announcement of a right-hand drive Mustang coming to Oz is should thrill muscle car fans of every nationality.
A right-hand drive Mustang means the Mustang could technically be sold in any country. According to the report, Ford’s VP of sales and marketing, Jim Farley, will personally fly to Australia to announce the good news on August 13th. The Mustang is slated to hit Aussie shores in 2016, the same year Ford ends manufacturing in Australia and is slated to end the Falcon line.
It’s a bittersweet announcement for Aussie Ford fans to be sure, but it’s good to know the Blue Oval hasn’t completely abandoned the continent.
