This may be one of the coolest Kickstarter projects that I have ever seen for Mustang Fans. A filmmaker and her crew are raising money to buy the cameras and other items they will need to document the restoration and the story behind a car dubbed “Demon on Wheels.” The car is a 1968 Mustang that according to the filmmakers was custom modified by Carol Shelby. If you say 1968 and Carroll Shelby in the same sentence I always think of the GT500 of the year. It’s not clear from the photos if that is in fact what they are restoring here.
The sweet Mustang getting a second chance at life isn’t the only cool thing about this story though. The owner of the Stang is as interesting as his ride. Apparently the owner, one Mike Ondish, was infamous in the Catskill Mountains in the late ’60’s to 1975 where he was known for street racing at speeds reportedly up to 170 mph in his custom Mustang said to have 863 horsepower at the wheels.
Ondish is said to have been a rumrunner wanted by the law in two counties. One day in 1975, Mike decided to leave all that behind him and put the car in a barn and that’s where the car sat until now. Mike is restoring the car to its former glory and the production company wants to document the rebuild and the story behind the car in its heyday while talking to Mike about the glory days. This is the sort of film I would love to see on TV or DVD. The production company of the film was looking to get $5,000 and they made it so the film will get off the ground. You can still donate on Kickstarter and the extra funds will go to help complete the movie. The company hopes that once finished the film might be show on TV by Speed or a similar channel.
