Some say the ’93 Cobra was the Fox Mustang’s swan song. It was the perfect way to signal the end of Fox Mustang production. If that’s the case, the ’93 Cobra R was an, ‘Oh c’mon’ moment. As if the ’93 Cobra wasn’t enough to pour salt in the wounds of those of us who couldn’t afford one, the ’93 Cobra R was like ripping off the band-aid, then pouring salt in it.
The ’93 Cobra R was a ’93 Cobra without A/C, sound deadening, a stereo, or any power options. The engine and drivetrain is identical to a standard Cobra, except for upgraded brakes, and a 5-lug design with the as-yet-to-be-introduced ’94 GT 17-in wheels. SVT’s goal was to make the car as light as possible for competition, and you had to have a competition license in order to purchase one when the cars were new. Evidently, the original buyer of this particular R-model didn’t put the car to its intended use.
This R-model has just 9 miles on it, and it could be yours. We didn’t have the guts to call for a price; we’ll leave that to you. The car is #90 out of the 107 built, and has been part of a private collection since new. The car was never dealer-prepped, or pre-delivery inspected, and is in as-delivered condition to Jack Demmer Ford in Wayne, Michigan.
The ’93 R-model is the rarest of the breed. SVT manufactured 250 ’95 Cobra Rs, and 300 ’00 Cobra Rs. Therefore, this one is certainly the proverbial needle in a haystack. Yes, this R-model wasn’t put to good use, but we’re glad someone had the foresight to set one aside for historical significance.
