Hurst Offers Two Options To Sharpen S550 Shifting

Sure the factory shifters have gotten better over the years, but they still don’t offer the precision enthusiasts demand. If you are looking to shorten your shifts and add a little style in the process, Hurst Shifters offers two manual-transmission shifter options for 2015-2017 Mustangs fitted with the MT-82 six-speed manual transmission.

The first option, documented in the installation video above, is the Indy shifter (PN 3916036; $163.97) for current Mustangs. It offers an 18-percent reduction in shift throw without straying too far from the factory shifter look despite being crowned with the familiar, black Hurst shift ball.

If you want a modest reduction in shift throw, Hurst offers its Indy shifter (left), if you want a more dramatic decrease and a classic look; the company offers its Competition Plus shifter.

Hurst S550 Shifter Features

Indy

• 18-percent throw reduction

• Classic Hurst black shift knob

• CNC machined billet steel parts

• Uses factory reverse lockout

Competition Plus

• 38-percent throw reduction

• Classic Hurst styling

• CNC-machined, billet steel construction

• Multi-link design

• Trigger-actuated reverse lockout

“As an Indy model, this shifter provides a noticeable amount of throw reduction and a firmer, crisper feel, all while retaining the factory reverse lockout collar and function,” says Hurst.

If you want an even shorter throw and a nod to Hurst’s classic past, the company offers a modern version of its storied Competition Plus shifter (PN 3916037; $316.73), which uses a T-shaped, chrome-plated trigger rod to disengage the reverse lockout mechanism.

If you just want that classic Hurst shift ball on your stock shifter, the company offers direct replacements in black (PN 1631225) and white (PN 1630225). These shifter balls fit the 2014-2017 Fiesta ST, 2016-2017 Focus RS, 2013-2017 Focus ST, and 2015-2017 Mustang.

“This new Hurst shifter utilizes a multi-link-type mechanism to achieve the perfect combination for a short throw shifter, reducing shift throw by 38-percent from front to back, while maintaining a smooth silky side-to-side shift that is barely reduced resulting in close to full side-to-side resolution,” says the company.
