Recent data released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for 2007-2009 model year cars shows some interesting finds. The study compares insurance losses by make and model, both overall and by individual coverage categories such as collision, property damage, medical payout and so on.

Among Mustang models, the 2007-2009 GT Convertible shows the lowest losses across the board. When adjusted so that 100 is ‘average’, the GT Vert’s overall score is 81, compared to the GT hardtop at 107. Similarly, the V6 convertible is better than the V6 hardtop, with a 102 versus 131 result.

Results in this year’s study were also adjusted for external factors, such as driver age, gender, marital status and state of residence. Similar results can be seen going back through the previous three IIHS studies, reaching back to the 2004-2006 time frame.

Mustang convertible sales usually run about one-third of the total, so their sample size is not small and the data should be quite reliable. While a similar pattern is repeated in comparing Shelby GT500 models, IIHS gave no overall score, indicating that there is insufficient data to determine a reliable result.

Insurance premiums from specific companies will vary according to other factors, including your age, driving record, geographical location and credit history. Safety and anti-theft features that were included with the car, as well as yearly mileage and use (business or personal) can affect rates as well.
