Jason Lee, the reigning NMRA Drag Radial series champion, has come out swinging in his title defense this spring, earning wins at the NMRA and NMCA season openers in Bradenton and the NMRA/NMCA All Star combo race in Atlanta to begin the year undefeated in both series.
With the third event of the season, the 12th annual Downs Ford Motorsports NMRA Nationals being held at the always-quick Maryland International Raceway, career best performances were ripe for the picking, and the Maumee, Oh. based racer took full advantage.
Wasting little time in solidifying his dominance in the Drag Radial category, Lee uncorked a record-breaking pass of 7.372 seconds at 190.19mph from his Strange Engineering-backed ’86 Mustang in the very first round of qualifying at MIR, and although he struggled in the remaining two sessions on Saturday, Sunday brought a return to sub-record territory, as Lee took backed up his provisional record pass with an even quicker 7.369 in round one.
In the second round, Lee one-upped himself just a few thousandths more, clicking off a 7.361 at 190.54. When all was said and done, the Strange Engineering racer had lowered his own elapsed time mark by more than .015-seconds from the previous mark of 7.523 set in Bradenton just two months ago. A mighty impressive performance for a 275 drag radial-equipped ride.
