In a recent special edition of the NBC television show, Jay Leno’s Garage, the ultimate car collector interviews Lee Iacocca, a man that Leno describes as one of his automotive heroes. Iacocca was named vice-president of the car and truck group at Ford in 1960 and was instrumental in the birth of the Mustang, later in 1964.
Iacocca later became President of Chrysler, where he championed both the successful K-cars and the ubiquitous minivan. In his retirement, however, he chose to return to the Mustang, creating a special edition for the 45th Anniversary of the nameplate.
It is unlike any other ‘special edition’ Mustang that has been built before or since. Enlisting the Gaffoglio Familty Metalcrafters, of Fountain Valley, CA, the S197 Mustang has been restyled in ways both subtle and direct. The roofline has been extended to a full fastback configuration, while changes in the front and rear fascia are more streamlined, while leaving the essential styling untouched.
We have two videos for you this time around. In the first one, Leno and Iacocca chat and go over the car, with Jay eventually taking it on a test drive. The second video is a promotional piece for the special edition car. Unless you’re a big Frank Sinatra fan, jump to 1:05 in this one for the action to start.
