Kenny Brown: Shelby GT500 Is The New Cobra R

Back around the turn of the millenium, Ford introduced the world to the Cobra R Mustang. This track day beast was made purely for racing (despite being barely street legal.) As good as it was from the factory though, the aftermarket found plenty of ways to improve upon SVT’s engineering. Kenny Brown found himself tuning a number of these Cobra R Mustangs, specifically focusing on the suspension systems.

According to a recent post over on Kenny Brown’s blog, the Cobra R’s have been replaced by the Shelby GT500 Mustang, though the song is still the same; make our cars handle better!

Kenny Brown is famous in the Mustang world for his exceptional suspension and handling packages, and few people have more insight than him when it comes to these improvements. These days though, the Cobra R and “Terminator” Mustangs have fallen out of favor. The hot new thing is the Shelby GT500, which boasts a lot of power…but not enough corner carving capabilities that many drivers want these days.

So Kenny Brown has been kept busy installing upgraded suspensions on the GT500. One of the most popular modifications is the KB GT-4 four-link rear suspension. He also does a number of GT-4 front suspension kits, in addition to upgrading the shocks, struts, and springs. Indeed, Shelby GT500’s can be seen at most track days across the country these days, and KB’s reputation for hot suspension setups is helping bring in the customers.

Kenny Brown goes into deep detail about all the work that goes into upgraded the GT500, so check out the blog for some additional reading, especially if you’re considering paying Mr. Brown a visit yourself.
