32 years. That’s how long Ford has been producing the Crown Victoria full-size sedan. That is a long, long time for any one car model. It is longer than even the Model T, and the Crown Victoria has achieved an iconic status here in America. From the taxi cabs of New York City to just about every municipal police department from sea to shining sea, the Crown Victoria has been there.
It is an amazing testament to simplicity in car design, but the time has come for production to end. And according to Jalopnik, the final Crown Victoria that rolled off the assembly line is destined…for Saudi Arabia.
Ford made its mind up in 2009 to kill the Crown Vic, deciding it would cost too much to build a replacement. In recent months Crown Vic sales have soared as taxi companies, police departments, and other fleet car owners stocked up. Production has wound down, and today was the day; the final five Crown Vics were assembled, and that is the end of the line.
But there is an addendum to this story, if Jalopnik’s sources are to be believed. Apparently this final car, which will be white with a tan leather interior, is heading for Saudi Arabia. Now to Ford, this may just be another Crown Vic, but to legions of dedicated fans the Crown Vic is so much more. This final car belongs in a museum, or at the very least a private car collection. Perhaps that is what the Saudi buyer plans to do…but for a car so iconic to America, shouldn’t the last one stay right here?
