Next year America gets an all-new Mustang, and pony car fever seems to be sweeping car collectors from coast to coast. Prices of collectable Mustangs continue to soar. Recently we saw the original Eleanor GT500 from the Gone in 60 Seconds movies sell for more than a million dollars, and a one-of-one 1967 Shelby Supersnake sold for a cool $1.3 million bucks. If you’ve got a classic Mustang, now is a great time to sell.
We don’t know if that is what motivated the McMurrey family to part with this substantial collection of Mustangs, but Mecum Auto Auctions will be selling off six classic (and one contemporary) Mustangs from the family collection. There’s something for everyone in this collection, and we’ll go in chronological order.
Starting with the 1965 K-code Mustang coupe with the 271 horsepower 289 V8 and 4-speed manual transmission, it was one of the first K-codes off the assembly line. Classic and unassuming, this is a classic example of an original pony car. Perfer the fastback look to the coupe? The McMurrey collection has a ‘66 Mustang GT fastback with the same drivetrain if that’s more your speed.
If you’re a Boss Mustang fan (and we know there are a lot of you) then the McMurrey collection has five rides for you to vie for. A 1969 Boss 302 four-speed with just 45,000 miles leads the lineup, while two 1970 Boss 302 Mustangs, one with a 302 and one with a 429 big-block, headline the lineup. There’s also a 2012 Boss 302 Mustang with just 1,000 miles on the odometer so far.
But if you were to ask us to name the crown jewel of the McMurrey collection, it is without a doubt that 1970 Boss 302 Mustang Trans Am prototype race car by Kar Kraft. This well-documented ride served as a testbed for the Trans Am modifications that helped the Mustang win the 1970 race season. This is the car to watch when the gavel falls.
This collection crosses the auction block later this summer at the Mecum Monterey event, August 15-17.
