Last weekend, the 60th Anniversary of the NHRA U.S. Nationals went down at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana, prompting an impressive turnout of Mustang Cobra Jets in the upper ranks of the competition. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Just check out what Ford Racing had to say about the Mustang domination below!
According to a recent press release from Ford Racing, the Super Stock final at the Labor Day Weekend NHRA Nationals was a Mustang enthusiast’s paradise with the only cars making it to the finals being Cobra Jet-powered. This led to an impressive showdown among Ford Racing’s best.
When the final light dropped, it was Nick Morris in his 1998 Mustang against Gary Richards and his 2010 Cobra Jet race car. When Richards red lit, Morris took the win, crediting his accomplishment to the powerful and reliable Cobra Jet engine under his car’s hood.
Cobra Jets also represented in the Factory Stock Showdown, Friday night of the U.S. Nationals with Chris Holbrook taking the highest honors. Holbrook defeated Bruno Massel and his 2014 COPO Camaro during the supercharged factory engines (FS/A) final. He then beat out Kevin Helms and his 2011 Dodge Challenger race car in the final overall Factory Stock Showdown race with an 8.694-second quarter mile at 154mph. Helms ran a 9.029-second quarter mile at 147mph in the final race.
This was Holbrook’s second year in a row winning the Factory Stock Showdown at the NHRA U.S. Nationals.
Of the top 37 drivers to qualify for the Stock and Super Stock classes at the Nationals, 14 of them were wielding Cobra Jet-powered cars, with eight taking home class trophies. Some notable names that took home top honors in their classes include Drew Skillman, Charles Downing, Brad Zaskowski, Gary Richard, Randy Hopkins and Brett Candies.
In addition to Brett Candies’ SS/BA class win at the event, another Candies family member, Brett’s brother P.B. Candies set the record for being the quickest Super Stock driver, with an 7.859-second quarter mile at 170.02 MPH in his SS/AAA 2010 Cobra Jet.
With such a massive representation of Cobra Jets and Cobra Jet-powered cars at the 2014 NHRA Nationals, Ford Racing couldn’t be any happier. Congratulations goes out to Ford Racing and all their competitors for a job well done!
