It’s Mustang Girl Monday brought to you by Team Mustang Girls. This week we would like to introduce you to Kristen Bliss and her 2014 Race Red Mustang GT. We met Kristen at the Performance Driving School put on by the Carolina Mustang Club and not only can she drive, she looks good doing it!
Growing up in the Boston area, the weather didn’t agree year round with Kristen’s family having a Mustang but she remembers saying “someday.” Her fascination came from having horses at a young age and thinking how cool it was that there was a car with a horse as its emblem. In many ways she compared her horses with the cars lines and speed. Her first “someday moment” was seeing a 1979 pace car with the shadow horses on the doors in the late 80’s. Kristen thought that car was absolutely amazing. Over the years after getting her license she never had the funds to buy anything but jalopies, nothing close to a Mustang. In 2001, for her senior prom while everyone was taking limos, Kristen convinced a family friend to let her take his 1968 Shelby GT350. She had to promise to not let her date drive but he never had a chance as there was no way she was giving up the keys!
When Kristen became a Mom in 2005 she went through a series of Jeeps, and regular “Mom cars.” As her family grew, the thought of a Mustang was pushed further and further to the back of her brain. Then on a recent vacation to Michigan, at the airport, she was scheduled to pick up a rental and they had a Camaro SS available. After some haggling, for $30 more a day she was in a modern muscle car and loved it. Even though it wasn’t a Mustang, she was able to gauge the practicality of her family “fitting” and that started the wheels turning.
After returning from vacation, Kristen contacted her local Ford dealer in Charlotte and started the process of finding her car. She knew she wanted a manual in Race Red or Gotta Have It Green. Eventually she was able to work a deal on a 2014 Race Red Mustang GT Premium with the track package. She named the car Scarlet or “Scar” for short. The next week Kristen “traded a seven month old 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk (perfect mom grocery getter) for MY perfect mom grocery getter!”
Now Kristen’s boys love when she picks them up from school. Their friends (and teachers) comment regularly on how “awesome” it looks and the boys always explain how their mom will race whoever’s dad…..and win! Driving has now become fun again and has given her a sense of freedom just like riding a horse did at a young age.
