If you’re a regular on this site, chances are you have contributed to the word ‘Mustang’ being more popular than ‘Superman,’ or ‘Batman’ when it comes to a chosen password. With passwords being such a huge part of our personal and professional lives, if you’re reading this, we bet at least one of them is either ‘Mustang,’ or Mustang-related. These days, we need a password for forum access, computer logins, online bank accounts, and the like. Passwords are a part of daily life these days.
Well, according to a recent study by Splashdata, ‘Mustang’ is the 16th most common password on the internet, overtaking ‘Superman’ and ‘Batman’. Furthermore, ‘Mustang’ is the only car name to appear in the top 25. The study isn’t telling us when it says adding letters, numbers, acronyms, and symbols strengthen the password. Everyone knows that.
Splashdata is a company that specializes in password management. How they know we all use ‘Mustang’ as a password is kind of scary, though. Hopefully, you people told them, and they aren’t giving out our banking information. If so, we hope they’re buying Mustang parts.
“We’re flattered people want to use ‘mustang’ as their password, but alone, it just isn’t strong enough to be secure,” said Keith Moss, Ford Director of Cyber Security. “We encourage people to use ‘mustang,’ but we recommend they strengthen their password by mixing upper and lower case letters, numbers, acronyms and symbols to make it unique.”
That’s it; we’re going to start using ‘Shelby,’ or maybe ‘GT500.’
