Next-Gen Shelby GT500 5.2 Engine Fully Exposed!

We don’t know what the next-gen GT500 will look like just yet, but there are several illustrated guesses, like this one, floating around the internet. We do, however, have a pretty solid idea what will power the new Shelby thanks to a steady stream of leaks.

They say that where there is smoke, there is most certainly fire. In the case of the next-generation GT500, the smoke is getting thicker. As we get closer and closer to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, next month, the Shelby leaks just keep coming. The latest is a fully exposed looking at the Predator 5.2-liter engine in illustration form.

Posted on Ford’s Motorcraft Service website, two illustrations offer a full-frontal and -dorsal views of the supercharged 5.2-liter engine that we shared with you first here. While these images seem to show a Shelby GT350 wiring harness atop the forthcoming engine, the illustrations do reveal some interesting tidbits that may foretell some details of the next Shelby.

Courtesy of two illustrations posted on Ford’s Motorcraft Service website, we have an overall look at the 5.2-liter Predator engine in illustrated form.

Looking at both views, it appears that there are no provisions for a high-pressure fuel pump other telltale signs of direct injection, which takes up valuable space in the valley that looks to be occupied by a supercharger. So it would seem that a traditional port-injection fuel system will feed the blown engine, which may simplify the modding process once these cars hit the streets.

Also of interest is what appears to be a flexplate bolted to the back of what we assumed is a smooth-spinning cross-plane crankshaft. While it doesn’t match the 2018 Mustang GT automatic flexplate, it could be a unique setup for the 10R80. Or, as some internet prognosticators have asserted, it could portend the Tremec seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that could continue the tradition of manual-only transmission options in Ford Performance’s halo Mustang.

We hope to learn some official news at NAIAS next month, but until then we’ll keep our ear to the ground for more of these interesting leaks.
