Last weekend Ford was all-aflutter over Tanner Foust’s second consecutive 1st place finish in the new Rally Cross racing series. Rally Cross is a combination rally race/autocross taking place over multiple surfaces include dirt, mud, and asphalt. While Foust definitely took home a hard-earned win, there were some other very interesting cars on the track as well.
Jalopnik points out that the 1st place finisher in the two-wheel drive class was none other than a 1978 Ford Fairmont station wagon. It doesn’t get any weirder than this.
The Fairmont belonged to Matthew Johnson of the Nitro Circus Team. In the video above, Johnson explains that he had originally wanted to compete in the more-competitive all-wheel drive class (which is where Foust won his victory). Since that was not possible however, he decided to make a good show out of the two-wheel drive class, where his competitors were a 200SX, Mazda Miata, and Ford Focus among other cars.
The Fairmont was powered by a great-sounding 348 cubic inch V8 and featured all the necessary equipment to properly race, like a roll cage and good tires. Watching the video, the Fairmont clearly dominates the other racers right off the line, though we’re sure the lighter, more agile four-bangers caught up in the corners. While it is always nice to win, even if the wagon had come in last place we would be impressed with the spirit of Johnson and his Fairmont wagon. It is all about having fun, after all.
