During the 1990’s, it seemed like every Mustang fan wanted to own a Saleen. Indeed, the mid-to-late 90’s seemed to have been the peak of Saleen sales and interest, and along with selling tons of modified Mustangs, the company also produced a purpose-built race car, the Saleen S7. From 1999 to 2001, Saleen also produced eight competition “SR” vehicles for track use only. A “street” version of these heavily modified Mustangs was also planned, but after only a single prototype was built, the project was dropped, and another rare Mustang slipped into obscurity.
However, Mustang Heaven found this one-of-one prototype on DFWStangs in a private collection, and the streetable race car looks to have been kept in mint condition.
Only eight Saleen SR Mustangs were built, and only one prototype “Street SR” ever made it on the road, and at some point it left Saleen’s hands and wound up with this collector, who completely rebuilt the car and had it remade in his own image. Now sporting Mystic paint but the same widebody setup from Saleen, it looks much meaner than it did in that awful off-white color. Under the hood we assume is the same 5.8 liter, supercharger V8 engine making 505 horsepower and 500 ft-lbs of torque that the Street SR was supposed to come with.
A substantial suspension improvement, big wheels, and that ridiculous widebody kit all come standard as well on this unique ride, which would have cost around $150,000 had it gone into production. It didn’t though, and instead it’s a leftover from a different era in Mustangs, and Saleen doesn’t seem to have any interest in pursuing motorsports the way they used to (though they still make some tasty track offerings.) It seems like the perfect car to keep in a collection, don’t you agree?
