In 1979 Ford gave the world an all-new Mustang, calling it the Fox body and heavily promoted it across various racing venues. This included the International Motor Sports Association, or IMSA, which ran mostly road races. The star of Ford’s effort to get back into racing was the McLaren Mustang, but there were three special street versions of the race track-only IMSA Mustang used to promote Ford’s return to serious racing.
These three wide-body street racers were called the “Enduro” Mustangs, and one has just surfaced for sale on Hemmings Auto Blog for a cool $59,500.
The Enduro Mustangs were built by Ford as promotional tools, and promote they did, showing up at race tracks and cruise nights across the country during the early 1980’s. Unlike the IMSA Mustang concept shown a few years earlier though, this baby packed a 5.0 liter 4-V H.O. V8 engine instead of the new 2.3 liter turbo Ford was pushing. In edition, unique widebody kits with huge fender flares and a massive spoiler gave the Enduro Mustangs a more of a race car look. That, and the suspension drop of at least an inch (probably more.)
The Enduro Mustangs were equipped to the hilt with everything from Ford’s racing arsenal. This included Koni shocks, springs, and sway bars, a 3:73 rear end, Recaro racing seats, an extractor hood, and 4-wheel disc brakes (which wouldn’t be found on any other Mustang except the SVO up until 1994.) The 5.0 V8 was backed by a 5-speed manual transmission. Just three of these cars were ever built, and up for sale is car #2, with an asking price of $59,500. Another expensive Fox-body for sale…but perhaps this one really is worth it?
