How long have you owned your current car? Most Americans hang on to a vehicle for between three and five years, though these days most of us are trying to stretch that out even longer. So for most of us, it is pretty hard to imagine holding on to any car for nearly fifty years. But there are people out there who do just that, often with cars that were already valuable.

Hemmings Auto Blog reports that a one-owner Shelby Cobra purchased in 1964 will be heading to auction this weekend at the Branson Auction in Branson, Missouri.

This original Shelby Cobra was purchased by Ed Johnson at Kansas City Ford in 1964. Johnson was the county Medical Examiner, and he raced and autocrossed the Cobra on a regular basis, earning numerous trophies and awards along the way. These awards, along with extensive documentation, will accompany the car to its new home.

So what exactly will it cost to put a one-owner, original Shelby Cobra into your collection? Estimates are for between $450,000 and $600,000 for this 289 Cobra, though it won’t be the only high-priced lot to cross the auction block. Other auctions include a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona with a HEMI and four-speed transmission and a one-of-98 HEMI Plymouth GTX. But the Cobra will be the star of the show, no doubt about that. It’s just not every day that such a car pops up for sale, and the extensive documentation adds a whole new level to the auction.
