Ah, the Saleen S7. Highly regarded among domestic enthusiasts as America’s first mid-engine production supercar, the Saleen S7 is a stunner. Built from 2000 to 2009 in a few different iterations, was the company’s first, full-fledged production car.
Fans of the Saleen S7 will know how “true blue” this car is, as its only engine option available was derived from a Windsor V8. The all-aluminum powerplant was bored-and-stroked to more than 427 cubic inches and produced a respectable 550 horsepower at the crank in its naturally aspirated form. In 2007, when Saleen decided to add two turbochargers into the mix, things got even faster for the S7.
Thanks to twin Garrett turbochargers producing a modest 5.5 psi, power increased to more than 750 at 6,300 rpm and 700 lb-ft of torque at only 4,800 rpm. Furthermore, the twin-turbo variant could reach 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and had a top speed of nearly 250 mph (248 to be exact). Heck, even the naturally aspirated version was still a performer, reaching 0-60 in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 220 mph.
These figures, even by today’s standards (nearly two decades later), are still impressive. Couple with the fact that all iterations of the S7 feature a hand-laid complete carbon fiber exterior and a curb weight of under 3,000 pounds – you’ve got yourself one supercar way ahead of its time.
