The retro-kick Ford has been on for the past few years has certainly served them well thus far. It all began with the return of the Mach 1 Mustang back in 2003. It brought us the first Mustang with a factory-shaker hood in decades, and it was something of a last gasp for the outgoing SN-95 model Mustangs. It has been six years and whole new Mustang model since the last Mach 1. Could the package make a return sooner rather than later?
It’s possible, though unlikely. We say this because while Ford has a plethora of performance Mustangs in the works, like the 2012 BOSS and GT500, a new Mach 1 could fit in well…as a looks package.
The original Mach 1 came out in 1969, when there were eight other performance-oriented Mustangs to choose from. The Mach 1 was mostly a looks package, including dual chrome exhaust tips, a matte-black hood with pins, a chrome gas cap and wheels. It also could be had with a performance suspension and engines as big as the 428 Cobra Jet. Such a package could be a big hit with today’s crowd.
The competition certainly has the options there. The 2010-11 Camaro can be had with the RS package on most models, including the V6, and it has HID headlights and a custom grill among other options. The Rallye package for the Challenger adds some retro wheels and striping to the Challenger, so the Mustang really could use a complete Mach 1 package (hopefully bringing back the Shaker hood too). On the same token, the 2011 Mustang has a plethora of options straight from the factory, including a matte-black hood coloring and 302 side stripes.
Would you want Ford to bring the Mach 1 back as an aesthetics package to improve the looks of the 2011 Mustang?
