Saga of 2012 Boss 302 #0001 Ends and the Story of #0333 Begins

It has been a very strange few weeks for me, since I purchased the 2012 Boss 302 kicking off the strangest weeks of my life. That first 2012 Boss 302 that I took home turned out to be the first one off the assembly line, #0001. Once the story broke, there were people coming out of the woodwork trying to buy the car. For a while, I drove the car, since I purchased a Boss 302 to drive, not to collect or to sit in the garage under a cover and get looked at on occasion.

My resolve to own and drive #0001 soon started to wither in the face of a number of factors. One of the big ones was the fact that a daily driven car soon grabs all the little imperfections that go along with a daily driver. Little nicks, dings, scratches and so forth that might not be a big deal on a normal car, but on something as special as the first Boss 302 made it was a big deal. Rather than fear every trip to the store or every dark cloud that came along, I decided to sell #0001. I put the car on eBay, and if you want to know the whys and hows of that auction, you can read the story about the eBay auction here on StangTV.

I had always harbored the hope that the collector who came to see #0001 days after I bought it home, when I wasn’t ready to get rid of it, would come back and take the car home. That collector has an exceptional collection of cars with some very nice Mustangs (including one of the first 50 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Secas) and the thing I liked about him was that he drives some of those special cars. I’m not going into the purchase price or what the eBay auction was up to when I ended it to sell to that local collector. Suffice to say in the images attached here you will see #0001 and #0333 side-by-side. The two orange cars are twins with one only slightly older than the other. It’s not hard to understand that in the end I got exactly what I said I would sell the car for – another Boss 302 just like it.

Last Friday I met the buyer of #0001 about 25 miles from my home. That meant for the first time in weeks I was actually back behind the wheel of #0001. The ride to meet the buyer reinforced the fact that I was doing the right thing with the sale. I worried constantly that someone would hit the car. The highway on the way to the meeting location was a recently paved and covered in loose gravel and fresh tar, with freshly painted stripes. My hands hurt when I finally reached my destination from gripping the wheel. I was glad to get there and see my new car, #0333 sitting there.

The first thing I thought was man that’s a damn sexy car. That was the first time I had rolled up on a 2012 Boss 302 in Competition Orange from a distance and the car looks mean. I parked beside my new car and handed over the keys. You might be surprised that a collector paying for a car like #0001 didn’t show up with a trailer to take it home. This collector is a driver. We swapped keys and he jumped behind the wheel of #0001 and drove it home over that same fresh gravel road I had worried about not half an hour before. I was glad to see #0001 go. I was even more glad to see #0333 come home. This was my car, the drive the bejeebers out of it, do burnouts, and act as if I was 16 again Boss 302 I went to buy those weeks ago when all I wanted was a driver.

I didn’t take it easy on #0333 on the way home. We got up to some mischief, freshly painted stripes and gravel no longer a concern. I am sorry to the city workers who just laid that fresh gravel. You have a pair of stripes on Highway 31 right outside of Kilgore, Texas that need a little work. Do really drive it every day? You bet I do. I picked up take out last night in it, if you see my running around my hometown I will probably have my daughters pink, glitter infused, booster seat in the back. This car is a driver, and a very fun driver at that.
