With the 2011 Ford Mustang GT, the Blue Oval gave engine builders and tuning shops across the country an all-new engine and a very historic name; the 5.0 liter V8. With a starting point north of 400 horsepower, this stout motor is every tuner’s dream. And its cousin, the 5.4 liter V8 from the GT500 also got a nice power bump to 550 horsepower. Still not enough for you?
Well if you’re still aching for more horsepower, then you might want to check out the new Super Snake package from Shelby American for the GT500. Mustangs Daily reports that an 800 horsepower 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.
That’s the top-of-the-line offering, though we’ve heard rumors of a 1,000 horsepower turbo version lurking around the Shelby offices. The standard Super Snake tune offers only 750 horsepower and 590 ft-lbs of torque. This is an upgrade over precious Super Snake packages, which offered only 725 horsepower to start (though it also had more torque, over 700 ft-lbs. What happened?) This is in line with the 800 horsepower from the 2011 Super Snake, but gone is the 660 horsepower option package it appears.
That’s not all that comes standard though; a unique fiberglass hood, forged brakes, signature stitching and badges all over the car identifying it as a Super Snake. There are also options for an upgraded two-tone leather interior, Shelby/Eibach suspension kits, and your choice of wheel finishes. No word on what this crazy car will cost, but we’re sure it’ll be more than most people make in a year (or two.)
