With great power comes great responsibility. That is what Uncle Ben told Peter Parker, aka Spider Man, and though those words may come from a comic, they are chock full of truth. Alas, we do not live in a world of superheroes…but that doesn’t mean people don’t do good things. Car guys especially have a tendency to give to charity, and the major American OEM’s are huge supporters of just about every righteous cause.
Carroll Shelby is no stranger to philanthropy either, and SPEEDTV reports that Shelby recently donated two very special go karts to a worthy cause, Karting2Live. These go karts, which were inspired by the current offering of Shelby Mustangs.
The karts were presented this weekend at the IZOD Indycar event to the Karting2Live non-profit group. Karting2Live offers physically disabled people a chance to experience the thrill of racing via specially-converted go-karts that replace the pedals with steering wheel controls. With so many Americans confined to crutches or a wheelchair, this gives them a chance to not only go fast, but compete on a fair and level playing ground with the able-bodied and disabled alike.
The two karts were inspired by cars currently in the Shelby garage. One is made to look like the GT500 Shelby Super Snake, the other a 2012 Mustang GT350. Like the other karts, these were built with special hand controls to allow those in wheelchairs a chance to participate. It’s a very cool project for a very cool cause, and anything that helps spread competitive racing to the masses (especially in Mustang-themed go-karts) is just peachy to us.
