Next month the S197 Mustang platform that has brought us to date the best performing Mustangs in history, will see it’s curtain call. Ford will end production of what will surely be the most storied and adored generation of Mustang since the Fox body, and begin retooling for Job 1 of the 2015 Mustang era.
While Ford has been trickling out details of the 2015 Mustang since it’s debut in December, they’ve yet to give us all the critical data, or a test drive, making it a long, slow dance. What they’ve also failed to divulge are any details regarding special edition models. While spy photographers have undoubtedly captured still camp wrapped 2015s prowling the streets with obvious enhancements on board, the Blue Oval isn’t saying a word about what these cars are.
We’ve long speculated that this is the upcoming GT350 model, a car we’ve had unofficial confirmation of twice via leaks by dealers showing ordering information in the Ford dealer computer system, thanks in large part to our friends at Mustang6g, we’ve done our best to make that information available to readers shortly after it was revealed to us.
Mustang6g is at it again, bringing us more spy photos and video of this upcoming Ford. Why is this very short video significant? In this particular video the exhaust system on the car being driven is not the quad-tip we’ve seen on other supposed GT350 testers. The car also doesn’t sound like any production Mustang we’ve ever heard.
Rumors have been flying that Ford’s Voodoo engine is in fact a Coyote variant with slightly more displacement than 5.0 liters, and sporting a flat-plane crankshaft that will allow it to rev past 8,000 RPM. A flat plane design would also give a more exotic exhaust note, and the car in this video does appear to have it.
So we have to wonder, are the rumors true about the Voodoo engine, and will it be dropped in the GT350? Or, is Ford out testing a new crate engine offering on the streets for validation? Only time will tell, and until we know more, head over to Mustang6g to check out more photos and join the discussion.
