Last June, Greenfield, Ill. native John Wellenkamp made his debut in the “10-Inch Tire Freak Show” known as Super Street Outlaw during the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in Joliet, Ill., rolling out a gorgeous and well-crafted new Mustang coupe with backing from Morrow Brothers Ford and veteran SSO ace Jason Smith calling the tuning shots.
Taking into account the things learned during their first abbreviated season and gauging the competition in what’s unquestionably one of the most exciting categories in all of drag racing, Wellenkamp and Smith set out during the off season to reinforce their efforts for their sophomore season, beginning with the construction of not just one, but two brand new 440 cubic inch engines topped with Brodix BF202 cylinder heads, built once again by Flying J Racing Engines.
In addition to the new powerplants, under Smith’s direction, Wellenkamp has given the coupe a virtual makeover, with anew custom PA Racing k-member and ladder bar setup, a new 25.3 cert roll cage, and fabricated nine inch housing installed by Hallowell Custom Fabrication. Among the other additions include new Santhuff spindle mount struts, Weld Racing V-Series black anodized wheels, a pair of TCI Pro-X Powerglide transmissions and a war chest of TCI and Neal Chance torque converters. On the electronics side of things, Wellenkamp picked up a new Race Pak V300 SD and an MSD Power Grid from Joe Oplawski at Hyperaktive Performance Solutions.
Finally, a brand new carbon fiber nose and hood from Shoneck Composites, soon to be wrapped in a brand new scheme from GregZ designs rounds out the aesthetic upgrades to Wellenkamp’s already immaculate Mustang.
According to Wellenkamp, the re-worked coupe should be complete and ready to hit the track by June – presumably back at the Super Bowl in Joliet – before embarking on a full schedule of NMRA national events and heads-up contests around the Midwest.
