When Ford first announced that the Boss Mustang would be making a triumphant return to the streets, they also announced the inclusion of a special “TracKey” feature. The TracKey turns the Boss 302 from street bruiser to track master, changing the engine characteristics from variable valve timing to throttle response. Alas, the initial debut of the TracKey was marred by (who else) California’s Air Resource Board, and thus the debut of the TracKey on the 2012 Boss Mustang was delayed quite a bit.
But all those hang ups have been taken care of for the 2013 Boss 302 Mustang, and starting tomorrow, May 1st, the TracKey will be available for all 2013 Boss Mustang models.
Let’s have a brief refresher on Ford’s TracKey. Designed to adjust the calibration on the Boss 302 Mustang’s 5.0 engine, the TracKey drastically alters the performance of the Boss. Among the many factors altered by activation of the TracKey is the variable valve and ignition timing, throttle response, Wide-Open Throttle fueling, and deactivation of the skip-shift feature (a fuel-saving feature inserted to avoid the gas guzzler tax).
If was the engine changes in particular that California’s Air Resource Board took issue with, delaying the debt of the 2012 Boss 302 Mustang TracKey by several months. But Ford has alleviated Cali’s concerns, and so starting tomorrow, all new Boss Mustangs can be had with the awesome TracKey feature. We’re glad to see Ford got this featured sorted for the new Mustang, because if there is anything Mustang fans hate, it’s waiting.
