Few Mustang icons are as popular or well known as Steve Saleen, a guy who started modifying Mustangs in his garage and later formed a multi-million dollar international company. Yet the last few years have seen Saleen move on from the company that bears his name to found a new company: SMS Supercars. That was almost five years ago, and litigation involving the use of his name has been ongoing.
Saleen put out this press release Monday morning, announcing that after several years of litigation, Steve Saleen has regained control of the Saleen brand. That’s big news for fans of the famed Mustang racer and tuner.
The announcement comes after successful litigation on the part of Steve Saleen after the Saleen brand filed for bankruptcy protection last summer. Saleen had come under the stewardship of Revstone Industries, the latest holder of the Saleen brand after Steve Saleen himself left (though some say forced) the company that bore his name. Prior to Revstone owning Saleen, several other companies had been briefly involved before parting ways with the historic brand.
But now that Steve Saleen has reunited with his brand, he plans on bringing the vehicles from his other company, SMS Supercars, under the Saleen flag. Indeed, this should mark the beginning of a new era for Saleen cars – one that hopefully sees Steve Saleen himself stay with the company until the day he dissolves it. A brand like Saleen should not exist without its founding family, or at least that’s our opinion on the matter.
We’re mostly just happy to have Saleen back though! We’d hate to lose another great Mustang brand to the march of time.
