There are few names in American motoring history that are as well known as Shelby. When it was originally founded, Carroll Shelby named his soon-to-be-famous company Shelby American, and these awesome automobiles found their way into every nook and cranny of Americana. These are some of the most valuable and legendary cars in all of America. So you’d think the museum dedicated to such a brand would be a big, flashy endeavor, right?
Apparently not. During a recent road trip Kamil Kaluski, aka Car Guy Dad, spotted a small, obscure Auto Museum in Boulder, Colorado. Thinking it would be nothing more than a small car collection, Kaluski was shocked to find that this building was the Shelby Museum, and he was there a half-hour before closing time on the only day of the week it was open.
This is no small collection of hardscrabble cars but rather over 40 cars, many of them vintage Cobras, housed in a nondescript building. There were plenty of Mustangs on display as well, including a GT500KR. Also in abundance were the GT40 race cars, including a black Le Mans racer, as well as a red Daytona coupe. Perhaps the most interesting vehicle though was not a Mustang or a Shelby, but a Falcon station wagon adorned with various Shelby bits. We’re still hoping and praying for a Mustang wagon, but this Falcon is pretty damn cool.
There aren’t just cars on display either, but pieces of memorabilia and car parts as well, like a DOHC V8 Indy engine and plenty of body parts. It is amazing to think that such a collection of rare, famous cars could be tucked away in a small museum with nary an advertisement. Then again, Americans have been hiding and hoarding rare automobiles in barns, fields and other out-of-the-way places for decades. But if you’re ever near Boulder, Colorado on a Saturday before 4 pm, be sure to check this little museum out. Not in the area?
