1964 was the perfect time and place to introduce the world to the Ford Mustang…though there are always those “what if?” questions that nag us when we look on history with a revisionist’s eye. What if, for example, Microsoft had been around to help design the very first Mustangs? Ford and Microsoft have a close relationship these days, as Microsoft helped design Ford’s SYNC infotainment system, so its a legit question.
And now we have a legit answer. CNet brings us the news that Microsoft has built themselves a ‘67 Mustang, loading it with every sort of high-tech goody they have in their vast repertoire.
Actually, Microsoft didn’t build this Mustang; the famed West Coast Customs did. Dubbed project Detroit, we had a few details on what Microsoft planned for this Mustang…but we didn’t quite realize the extent of the technology going into this classic. While we aren’t surprised to learn that there is an Xbox 360 on board, we were surprised to learn that underneath the ‘67 body is the chassis and motor of a 2012 Mustang.
Besides looking badass, there are a number of other awesome features on Project Detroit, like a heads-up display for the driver that shows weather and gas station location. A heads-up on the passenger’s side connects to the Xbox 360 (though the driver can’t see it.) Even better, when parked the rear windscreen can flip up and turn into a projector to play video games on. There are even external speakers and cameras that can be monitored from a Windows Phone allowing the driver to honk at people who get too close.
This…is pretty much the ultimate Mustang. Modern engine and suspension, classic looks, and futuristic technology. What more could you ask for?
