Back in the 1990’s, it seemed like the Big Three had conceded the “sport sedan” segment to European and Japanese manufacturers. America seems intent on taking the segment back though, with cars like the Cadillac CTS-V, Dodge Charger SRT8, and Ford Taurus SHO. Still, we’re always looking for more options, and looking at the performance sedans over in Australia…we’d like to get our hands on some of those.
Ford Performance Vehicles, the Blue Oval’s performance division Down Under, has just released information on two new “entry-level” performance sedans, the Falcon GS Sedan and Ute, Edmunds Inside Line reports.
The Falcon GS was offered last year as a limited-edition car, a ploy by Ford to test the waters for an entry-level sports sedan. Obviously demand was great enough for Ford to bring the Falcon GS back for full time duty. In addition to the four-door sedan, a Ute version is also offered. Both cars feature the supercharged “Miami” 5.0 liter V8 engine which makes 422 horsepower and 402 ft-lbs of torque. As we went over in a previous post, the numbers for this supercharged 5.0 are so low because the engines are “Euro IV” emissions compliant, a very strict standard of governing engine emissions.
Still, with an MSRP of $56,025 for the sedan, and $51,110, these hardly seem like “entry-level” prices. A Cadillac CTS-V has a $62,165 MSRP and has a 556 horsepower V8 engine. On the same token, if Ford were to import these cars to the U.S., they’d likely be making much more power. With rumors swirling that the next Falcon could share a platform with the Mustang, anything is possible.
