With incredible performances bordering on the six-second zone all season, the NMRA Super Street Outlaw crown was as hard fought of a battle as it’s been in years. But when the curtain finally closed, just as he has six other times in his illustrious career, John Urist left the Nittro Tire NMRA World Finals in Bowling Green as a champion – earning his record seventh NMRA crown.
The Albuquerque, New Mexico-based racer entered the seasons final event atop the points, although veteran Chris Tuten, who has struggled all season long but remained right in the chase, was within striking distance should Urist falter. But “The Fireball,” who has been in this position enough to not be shaken, wasn’t about to relinquish his points lead and the title, and came out guns blazing in qualifying, blasting to the quickest pass in Super Street Outlaw history at 7.025 seconds with a booming 208.71 MPH speed to his credit to lead the field into eliminations. But just a tick back was Tuten, with a 7.03 effort that had him second in the order.
Urist opened eliminations with a decisive 7.06 defeat of local hero Joel Greathouse, while Tuten did likewise with a 7.12 to down Kenjo Kelley and his game 7.23. But in round two, the title hunt came to a close, as Tuten fell off the pace and trailed Terry Elam across the stripe in a close 7.24 to 7.28 drag race, while Urist marched to a 7.04 rout of Sam Vincent to officially claim his seventh Super Street Outlaw title.
Putting an exclamation point on the championship season, Urist picked up yet another event title with a painfully (for the competition) consistent 7.05 at 202.64 as final round opponent Terry Eam struggled and slowed to a 10.50.
