Car companies have historically come up with creative marketing ideas when it comes to selling cars. Ford took its then-new 1965 Mustang to the top of the Empire State Building to help get the word out. Car commercials are generally pretty entertaining too, especially Mustang commercials. But we’ve noticed something of a dearth in Mustang commercials, despite two new engines and sharp new looks. What gives?
Since we couldn’t find any new 5.0 Mustang commercials to show you, we dug up a few classic ‘80’s videos and as you can see for yourself they are pretty Mustangeriffic.

This first video possibly showcases the best of 80’s Mustang commercials. It comes to us from the heart of 80’s, when big hair and tight pants were all the rage. It was also a time of increasing fuel economy standards, which is why the Mustang got an odd option: the ’84 turbocharged SVO Mustang (more on that in a second). The commercial also highlights the 5.0 GT and the convertible, and it is all about the M-m-m-mustang!

This second commercial focuses on the SVO. Ford took a different approach to fuel economy standards, offering a turbocharged 2.3 liter four-cylinder engine in the mid-80’s. This engine actually made more horsepower than the V8 at the time (though not according “official” estimates). It was a cult hit, but Ford scrapped the SVO model in 1987, right before the Mustang got its modern refresh.

This third video highlights the major redesign, which included a new front fascia, interior, model, the LX. No mention of the SVO (which was discontinued) but plenty of classic “jump” footage. The 1980’s were certainly a simpler time in terms of car commercials but we’d like to see a modern interpretation sometime soon, Ford.
