It is probably safe to assume that most of us like going fast, but we don’t get too many (legal) chances to pursue our need for speed, what with the lack of an American Autobahn. The fastest anybody can legally drive in this country is 80 mph, unless you go to an event like the Texas Mile, where the only limit is how fast your car can handle. And while anything over 150 mph is pretty damn fast, there are those who push the limits well beyond 200 mph. We can only imagine what that feels like.
Lucky for us though, modern technology allows us to take a virtual ride along with those who would push the limits of top speed. This video found by Jalopnik gives us a chance to (sort of) experience what 232 mph feels like in a twin-turbocharged Hennessey Performance Ford GT.
Hennessey offers twin-turbo packages for the Ford GT, using dual 67mm ball-bearing turbos in coordination with a heavily upgraded 5.4 liter V8 to produce about 1,000 horsepower. This particular car, a 2006 Ford GT owned by Mark Heidaker and driven by Sean Kennedy, features a custom twin-turbo system that provides up to 1,300 horsepower.
That allowed this particular car to reach speeds of 232 mph in the standing mile, even though it was a particularly hot day and headwinds were keeping the top speeds lower than usual. That’s not to say this car is slow; by the end of the quarter mile, it was already going over 143 mph, and at the half mile the car was over 190 mph, and 216 mph at the three-quarters mile mark. This Ford GT accelerates so quickly that there isn’t even a need to use sixth gear. That’s what we call crazy-fast.
