Now that BOSS Mustangs are getting into owner’s hands, we’re able to get a better sense of what Ford has managed to put together in this special edition Mustang. One of those BOSS Mustangs arrived at American Muscle and the folks there rented the Lightning circuit at New Jersey Motorsports Park to check it out.
To make things a little more interesting, they also brought along a stock 2010 Camaro SS for comparison. The drivers, Andrew Ball and Jim Bianco, are company employees with ten years of successful racing experience. From a standing start on the 14-turn, 2.25 mile track, the BOSS made it back to the line two seconds faster than the Camaro SS.
The lap time for the 2012 Boss 302 Mustang was 1:20.392, while the Camaro SS posted a 1:22.440 result. You’ll see in the video that the Camaro was fast off the line, but couldn’t sustain its advantage at speed. Here are some comments from the American Muscle folks.
The 2012 Ford Boss 302 Mustang was not only more comfortable on the track, but much more at home than the similarly rated 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS. We realize that the Boss is a purpose-built motorsports car (even though it’s stock). To be fair, the Camaro was completely stock, as well. With a 2.048 second lap time difference, the Boss would gain more and more of a separation over time. It held up better at high speeds and extreme driving, with better handling, less brake fade and quicker acceleration.
The 2012 BOSS 302 Mustang is a special edition Mustang inspired by the late-60s BOSS 302 Mustang that dominated Trans Am racing.
