Former NMRA Super Street Outlaw competitor Don Burton went for a wild ride that he won’t soon forget at the Maryland International Raceway on Saturday, leaving his familiar Fox body Mustang a little worse for wear.
Competing in the Outlaw Drag Radial category during MIR’s East Coast Door Wars event, Burton’s mount, equipped with a set of 315 Drag Radials and a pair of ProCharger’s these days, ripped the tires loose right at the hit in his opening round matchup with Don Carter’s Corvette, and that’s where it got interesting. After pedaling the car once, the tires broke loose again, sending it toward the centerline. A third and final slap of the loud pedal to regain traction ultimately took control of the car as it sashayed and careened at nearly a head-on angle into the right lane retaining wall.
The resulting ricochet of the damaged Mustang sent it into the wall once more, where the momentum carried it up the angled jersey barrier into a rather awe-inspiring pirouette before rolling to a stop backwards on all fours to a 7.62 elapsed time. Both sides of the silver Fox (and the undercarriage one could presume) showed some extensive damage, but most importantly, Burton was uninjured and climbed from the battered machine under his own power.
