With a victory at the Sno*Rally and a podium finish in the 100 Acre Wood, young Dillion Van Way has managed to stay at the top of the rally pack in the 2wd class. Things were looking good for the college freshman going into the Olympus Rally. With a new turbo kit, suspension, and six-speed transmission installed, this formidable Fiesta was ready to pounce.

Alas, as is the nature of rally racing, one small mistake can lead to a huge accident. Ford Racing released this video interview with Van Way, and at the end you get a front row view of the accident that ended his day early.

But first, on a positive note, that turbocharged Fiesta makes some pretty impressive power. 272 horsepower according to Ford Racing(at the wheels?? We’re not sure, but if so, color us impressed.) Van Way had previously been making due on the Fiesta’s peppy-but-not-race-prepped 140 horsepower engine. Being burdened with school work cuts into practice time for rally racing though, and when combined with the new suspension setup and turbocharger, it’s easy to understand how Dillion could end up in a ditch. Dillion and his co-driver were ok, even though the Fiesta flipped, and he just caught that ditch the wrong way this time it seems.

The DNF for Van Way and the first place finish for his closest competitor, Wyatt Knox, has put the young Ford driver at quite a deficit to the Mazda team. Tis the nature of the rally beast that sometimes, you just don’t finish. But Dillion will be back, with a faster car and more practice time under his belt. Knox better not get too comfortable at the top.
