We all love the rumble of an open-header V8 right before it launches down the drag strip. Living with that sound on a daily basis is a different story though. It is why even the most aggressive mufflers manage to dampen the sound quite significantly. For the 2010-2011 Mustang, Ford also included a “sound tube” which deadens the 5.0 V8’s rumble inside the cabin, while allowing a more aggressive note on the outside of the car.
Still, there are those who would rather do away with the awkward-looking sound tube. We found a two-part YouTube video that demonstrates the difference removing this tube will make.
YouTube user gaspi101 is the lucky owner of a 2011 Mustang GT, and he takes us on a quick tour of the Mustang 5.0’s engine bay. What is that long, ugly, snake-like tube running from the air intake to the firewall? That wound be the sound tube, which absorbs some of your engine’s natural sound and pipes it into the body of the car. The result is a quieter cabin but not everybody wants a “quiet” cabin.
All one has to do is remove the two pieces of foam in the part of the sound tube near the firewall to get a much louder sound. Some people leave one of the foam pieces in; others cut them in half. It really is up to the driver, but any altercations essentially make the car louder. In part 2, gaspi101 makes a quick street run to demonstrate the difference removing the foam makes. We also like to think that getting rid of the whole tube just leads to a much cleaner-looking engine bay.
Is this mod worth the hassle? Or should you just invest in a good exhaust system?
