Video: Rowdy Turbo Mustang Won’t Stay Grounded

The explosion of small-tire racing onto the drag racing racing landscape back in the late 90’s spawned some of the craziest passes down the 660′ you will ever witness. Thankfully, Sean Melton of Urban Hillbilly Action Videos was a mainstay at many of these races, capturing the insanity for all to see. In this clip, we see this boosted Fox body Mustang that’s believed to be David Pearson (previously thought to be Ray Johnson) put on one heck of a show.

The video, shot at Huntsville Dragway at one of Mike “Hitman” Hill’s Outlaw Doorslammer races, shows a race that starts as many small-tire races do: two turbocharged hot rods battling it out, popping and banging as they build boost on the starting line, then one of them powering into a wheelstand just after the tree flashes green. The driver catches the wheelstand quickly and pedals the throttle to return the nose to a horizontal plane. However, he immediately plows the loud pedal again and, using the bounce-back of the pedal job, his Mustang lifts the nose again, even higher than the first wheelie.

Again, he lifts the throttle to return the nose to earth and promptly powers again into a third wheelstand and, now nearing the finish line, the car is now carrying enough speed to actually take flight, with all four wheels leaving the asphalt and the car flying for what looks to be a full eighty feet or so, barely returning to the track in time to trip the beams with a sub-5 second elapsed time, according to the announcer. While the ride was intense, the car returned safely to earth and appeared to be undamaged as he brought the car to a safe stop.

It’s definitely a spectacle to see a relatively stock-appearing car with enough power on tap to lift itself completely off the ground in such dramatic fashion. Crank up your speakers (or headphones if you’re in the office) and listen to these turbo monsters as they attack the Alabama asphalt!
